Welcome to my blog about what it is like to be a hairstylist in Austin, Texas. I post regular updates about booking, beauty tips, current events at my salon, and beauty trends. Join me as I discover where this journey will take me!

I am a native Austinite. I feel like the trends in Austin are all about looking effortless and celebrating natural beauty. This is my goal when taking care of my clientele. I find that I tend to do more natural looks on people versus anything too forced looking, too trendy, or wild. I’m more of a stylist for people looking for classic looks with a slight edge. My clientele is mostly women but I do have some men (and kids)  who typically have longer or colored hair. I like to take my time with each client so I can thouroghly hear their needs, pamper them, set goals, and get on a regular maintenance plan. I am very passionate about education for my self and my clients. I want to make sure we are keeping up with the latest trends, products, and the most efficient techniques.

A lot of my regular clients prebook months in advance or set standing appointments to no end. I recommend booking about a month in advance to get the days and times that work best for you. I am more than happy to accommodate so please feel free to reach out to me if you have any booking issues. Now that I have an assistant, my schedule is much more flexible and easy to work with.

I feel so lucky to be able to do cutting and coloring behind the chair because it is creative outlet and it is very therapeutic for me to be artistic for work. I get to be independent and self-employed. I can be flexible with my schedule if I need to but I do have a 24 Hour Cancellation Policy. 48 hours to a week’s notice is preferred if possible. I do this to serve you better. I rarely cancel on my clients. Consistency and custumer service are the foundation that I have built my business upon.

As far as Salon Culture, my Mission Statements are:

1) Making my down time my up time (cleaning my work area as I go, returning texts and emails regarding booking ASAP, pitching in with folding towels, and being as efficient with my time at work as possible).

2) Creating a positive energy for the most enjoyable experience (for my clients, my co-workers and their clients too).

3) The most important objective is education and building a culture of hairdressers that lift each other up. I feel like staying up to date with the latest trends and techniques is key. The only way we can do that is by sharing knowledge and helping each other out. This is such a special community and I was taught to share the wealth (whether it’s through education or business). There is always more than enough to go around. My late boss at Bella always said “to never live in scarcity”. I believe that what you put out in the universe will come back to you.

My Goals:
To constantly work on my patience, organization, kindness, and the ability to stay calm in stressful situations. I continue to work on my confidence and attitude every day. I’ll keep it real, I am no where near perfect. I have a lot of learning and growing to do. In the short term, I would like to work only 4 days a week (maybe in the year 2020). In the long term, I would like to work only 3 days a week (maybe in the year 2030).

Nothing makes me happier than taking care of people. If for some reason I am not the hairdresser for you because of my availability or style, I would be elated to refer to to a trusted colleague. Below is the list of my favorite people in my industry.

Kelsey Hansen was my previous assistant at Bella Salon in the year 2012, she is now a certified Schwarzkopf Color Expert. She is very familiar with how I do things and I trust her with my clientele regularly. You can find her on Instagram @hairbyhansen or http://www.joelraysalon.com

Jennifer Hillsman and Aimee Kord (@aimeekord) at Joel Ray Salon are amazing at extensions, experienced at hair cutting, and advanced colorists. You can book with them on the Joel Ray Salon website or call our front desk (512)899-8311. I’ve worked with these ladies for almost my entire career and we have similar training.
